Seeded Bermudagrass

Quick to establish and best-suited for full sun locations, bermudagrass is heat tolerant and capable of developing a deep, extensive root system. When fully established, bermudagrass requires significantly less water than traditional cool season species to provide a quality turf surface. Both stoloniferous and rhizomatous, bermudagrass exhibits high density, strong traffic tolerance, and excellent traffic recovery when mowed at 1” or lower.

Seeding & Maintenance Instructions

Seeding Rate:

New Turf: 2-3lbs./1,000 sq. ft

Existing Turf: 1lb./1,000 sq. ft.

Overseeding Existing Turf: 1lb./1,000 sq. ft

Verify that the seed has adequate soil contact. Bare spots should be seeded at new turf rate.

Temperature:

Soil temperatures should be above 65° F (18° C). Optimum soil temperature for germination and root growth is 75° to 80° F (24° to 27° C).

Planting:

Plant in spring and summer, in full sun areas, on well-drained soil. The seedbed should be prepared with 6 inches of loose soil and 1/2 inch of fine topsoil. Seed can be applied with a broadcast spreader, seeder, hydroseeder, or by hand. Care must be taken not to cover the seed with more than 1/4 inch of topsoil. Roll to ensure good seed to soil contact.

Germination & Establishment:

Keep seedbed moist to enhance germination. Under ideal conditions, germination will begin within 10 to 14 days and should be complete within 3 to 4 weeks. Full establishment should occur in 4 to 6 weeks. Establishment time may vary if planting date occurred early or late in the planting season.

Fertilization:

For optimum results apply 1/2 to 3/4 lbs. of Nitrogen/1,000 sq. ft. per month during the growing season. These amounts will fluctuate depending on your area and the level of maintenance the bermudagrass receives.

Mowing:

First mowing should occur approximately 3 weeks after seeding. It is recommended not to remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade during each mowing. Minimum mowing height is 1/2 inch with optimum mowing height at 3/4 inches.

Watering:

A watering program of frequent, light waterings should be followed for 1 to 2 weeks after planting to enhance germination. After establishment, less frequent, deep watering is preferred.

Winter Overseeding:

Overseeding with Barenbrug Bermudagrasses with Top Flight™ perennial ryegrass blend or SOS® annual ryegrass blend can provide year-round green. Avoid verticutting and scalping of immature bermudagrass (turf less than 6-8 months old).
